Russia announces roster of women’s ice hockey team for 2019 Winter Universiade

The Russian national women’s ice hockey team is the champion of the previous FISU Winter Universiade,

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation announced on Tuesday a list of players on the national women’s team for the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade, which kicks off early next month in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk.

According to the roster the goalkeepers are: Nadezhda Morozova; Valeria Merkusheva and Valeria Tarakanova.

Defense: Maria Batalova; Anna Shibanova; Nina Pirogova; Yekaterina Nikolayeva; Anastasia Chistyakova; Yelena Provorova; Liana Ganeeva; Nadezhda Volf.

Forwards: Yelena Dergacheva, Alyona Starovoitova, Anna Shokhina; Alevtina Shtareva; Oxana Bratishcheva; Viktoria Kulishova; Yekaterina Dobrodeyeva, Valeria Pavlova; Anna Timofeyeva; Diana Kanayeva; Yevgeniya Dyupina; Fanuza Kadirova.

The Russian national women’s ice hockey team is the champion of the previous FISU Winter Universiade, which was hosted by Kazakhstan’s Almaty in 2017.

In the final match on February 6, 2017 at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace, the national squad of Russia defeated Canada 4-1 to grab the gold of the 2017 Winter Universiade. A total of seven national women’s ice hockey teams participated in the 2017 Winter Universiade: Russia, Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Great Britain, the United States and Japan.

The Russian Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, which has a population of over one million, was elected to host the 2019 Winter Universiade at the session of the FISU Executive Committee in Brussels in 2013. The event is scheduled for March 2-12, 2019.

The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city. The name of the international sports event is a combination of two words, which are ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad.’

It is only second to the Olympic Games. The program of the Winter Universiade currently includes 6 compulsory sports (8 compulsory disciplines) and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.

The 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk offers 76 sets of medals in 11 sports competitions, which are Alpine Skiing, Curling, Biathlon, Figure Skating, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboard, Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Bandy and Ski Orienteering.
