ST. PETERSBURG, January 28. /TASS/. Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova defeated on Monday Daria Gavrilova of Australia in the opening round of the 2019 WTA St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy tennis tournament.
The match lasted for 1 hour 48 minutes and ended with Sharapova’s straight sets win of 6-0; 6-4 over her 24-year-old Australian opponent. Sharapova is facing her compatriot Daria Kasatkina in the second round of this tournament.
The St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy is classified as the WTA (Women Tennis Association) Premier tournament since 2016 and it was first held in Saint Petersburg in 2003.
This year the tournament runs in the Russian second largest city between January 29 and February 4 and offers $823,000 in prize money up for grabs. The winner of the tournament will pack $141,500.
Sharapova is Russia’s most decorated tennis player having won a total of five Grand Slam tournaments, namely the Australian Open in 2008, the French Open in 2012 and 2014, Wimbledon in 2004 and the US Open in 2006. She also clinched the silver in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was the 2008 Federations Cup champion.
In 2018 Sharapova participated in 11 tennis tournaments, including four Grand Slam competitions. Her best results last season were the semifinals of the tournaments in China’s Shenzhen and Italy’s Rome.
