Russia’s Krasnoyarsk well prepared for 2019 FISU Winter Universiade - directorate’s chief

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. The Directorate of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk has accomplished all tasks set for 2018 regarding the organization of the international sports event, Maxim Urazov, the chief of the Universiade-2019 directorate, told TASS on Thursday.

The Monitoring Council of the 2019-Universiade gathered for a session on Thursday in Moscow to sum up the results of the preparation works for the 2019 Winter Universiade, scheduled to kick off next spring in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk.

"The Monitoring Council is a very important management body, which makes key decisions at its sessions regarding the preparations for the competition," Urazov said. "Today we have focused on a report on the Directorate’s activities in 2018, discussed preparations for test activities and talked about testing of certain services."

"The report about the activities of the Directorate has been approved, everything that was planned has been implemented for the most of its part, and this is the most important," Urazov stated. "The year of 2018 was fruitful and this is the most important, a positive ground was prepared for the next year."

"The majority of testing events have been completed, we are on full steam entering the operational period, we are processing in accordance with the plans and are solving a great deal of complicated issues each day," he said.

The Russian Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, which has a population of over one million, was elected to host the 2019 Winter Universiade at the session of the FISU Executive Committee in Brussels in 2013. The event is scheduled for March 2-12, 2019.

Preparations for the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk are also supervised by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Organizing Committee of the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade is chaired by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets and also includes Minister of Science and Higher Education Mikhail Kotyukov, Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Konstantin Noskov, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova, President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Norilsk Nickel CEO Vladimir Potanin and TASS News Agency Director General Sergei Mikhailov.

The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city. The name of the international sports event is a combination of two words, which are ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad.’

It is only second to the Olympic Games. The program of the Winter Universiade currently includes 6 compulsory sports (8 compulsory disciplines) and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.
