English Premier League to introduce VAR from next season

English Premier League is the last major European national championship to introduce the system

MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. The Video Assistance Referee (VAR) system will be introduced in the English Premier League starting from 2019/20 season, the league’s press service said on Thursday.

The Premier League clubs voted to introduce VAR at a meeting earlier in the day.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which oversees changes of regulations in the sport of football, approved the use of Video Assistance Referee systems in 2016. The system was used in a testing mode for a period of two years in a number of national football championships, as well as during the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Earlier, European football association UEFA announced it would introduce the system in its Champions League starting from next season.

Media reports in April said that VAR would operate in test mode during season 2018/19 of the English Premier League, the last major European national championship which still has not introduced the system.
