Moscow, May 18. /TASS/. Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo and his Peruvian colleague Juan Diego Flórez will take part in 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony. The global stars will perform in Red Square in the center of Moscow on June 13, the event organizer’s press service informed.
"Placido Domingo and Juan Diego Flórez have confirmed their participation in the concert timed to the opening of the FIFA World Cup. The concert will take place on June 13, 2018 in Red Square," the press service said.
As previously reported, pianist Denis Matsuev, global opera stars Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eivazov, Ildar Abdrazakov, Aida Garifullina and Albina Shagimuratova will participate in the concert. Their performances will be accompanied by the Mariinsky Theatre symphony orchestra directed by Valery Gergiyev.
French tenor of Italian descent Roberto Alagna, who was set to participate in the concert earlier, will be unable to perform in Moscow.
"It is interesting that football events are usually opened by opera stars, because classical music is a universal code understood by residents of every country. Montserrat Caballe and Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, who performed at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, have set a great example to be followed. Luciano Pavarotti continued this tradition during the Winter Olympic Games in Turin," the organizers reminded.
The matches of the 2018 World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15 in 11 Russian cities. It will be the first FIFA World Cup held in Russia.
