World champion Desailly opens 2018 World Cup Park in Yekaterinburg

The park is divided into 11 sections

YEKATERINBURG, April 29. /TASS/. The 2018 World Cup Park was unveiled today in a historical garden square in the center of Yekaterinburg. France’s world football champion Marcel Desailly, Sverdlovsk Region Deputy Governor Pavel Krekov, tournament envoys from Yekaterinburg Anton Shipulin and Alexander Pantykin and French actor Samy Naceri took part in the opening ceremony, TASS reports from the venue.

"An important event will be held soon - the World Cup," Krekov said. "I hope that our team will win. I congratulate everyone on the park’s opening."

Desailly called on Ural fans to support the French team that will play with the Peruvian team at a group stage match in Yekaterinburg on June 21. "I was in Moscow last year at the opening of the Confederations Cup Park, and today I am glad to open the 2018 World Cup Park in Yekaterinburg," the world champion said. "I call for participation in all competitions, as football unites. And don’t forget to support France’s team that will play a match here."

Shipulin congratulated fans on the park’s opening, noting that he favors open football, and expressed hope that Russia’s team will perform well at the tournament.

The park is divided into 11 sections: visitors will have a chance to play with a robot goalkeeper at the RoboKeeper attraction, take a selfie with the 2018 FIFA World Cup mascot - Zabivaka the Wolf - take part in a football freestyle masterclass, apply for a Fan ID and fight with each other in a new sport - a mixture of football and table tennis.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will run from June 14 to July 15. Yekaterinburg will host four group stage matches: Egypt - Uruguay (June 15), France - Peru (June 21), Japan - Senegal (June 24) and Mexico - Sweden (June 27).
