New witnesses surface in Siberian mall fire tragedy

A fire broke out in the Zimnyaya Vishnya shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, killing 64 people

KEMEROVO, April 2. /TASS/. New witnesses have appeared in the case of the blaze that struck the Zimnyaya Vishnya (Winter Cherry) shopping mall in Kemerovo, said Sergei Menyailo, Russian Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Siberian Federal District, on Monday.

"We are disclosing anything and everything [to the public] that can be divulged and even more than that. I talked to the Investigative Committee today, and additional witnesses have been found. [The Investigative Committee] will bring you everything that can be disclosed, so that there aren’t two ways to explaining [anything], whether they closed the door or not and so on. Nevertheless, the investigation still has the dimension of secrecy," the plenipotentiary representative said.

Menyailo added that Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin would come to Kemerovo in a few days. He also reiterated that "a very experienced group of criminal experts" is working in the city.

A fire broke out in the Zimnyaya Vishnya (Winter Cherry) shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, killing 64 people, including 41 children, and injuring 79 people, with 27 children among them. According to earlier reports, several versions are being investigated, including short-circuit failure and arson. Seven people are defendants in the criminal case.
