Russian Far East's Lake Baikal is the oldest and deepest freshwater reserve in the world. The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m Baikal contains roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water.
