Dog sled race in Kamchatka, Chukotka may become world’s longest
Several exhibitions and presentations will be held ahead of the new combined race, particularly in Asian Pacific countries
ANADYR, November 18. /TASS/. The distance of a combined dog sled race that will pass through Russia’s Chukotka autonomous region and Kamchatka region may end up being 2,500 kilometers long, so the race could be considered the most difficult and longest in the world, the press service of the Chukotka government said on Friday.
The organizing committees of the Nadezhda dog sled race held in Chukotka and Kamchatka’s Beringiya race have announced a new combined race at their first interregional meeting.
"The combined dog sled race of Chukotka and Kamchatka will take place in the first half of 2018. The proposed route of the combined race is at present supposed to be around 2,500 kilometers long, thus the race will become one of the biggest and most difficult in the world," the press service said.
"We need to ensure security, in the first place. For that we should stipulate the best logistics for the race, deliver necessary staple products, including dog food, to the settlements on the route and provide transport vehicles that will accompany the racers. In order to solve some issues, we will turn for assistance to the Russian Emergencies Ministry and the Federal Security Service Border Agency," head of the Chukotka Department for Sports and Tourism Yevgeny Tikhomirov said.
As reported earlier, the governors of Kamchatka and Chukotka signed an agreement on combining the Nadezhda and Beringiya traditional dog sled races. One of the goals is to develop a new regional tourism product. Several exhibitions and presentations will be held ahead of the new combined race, particularly in Asian Pacific countries.
