Three moderate earthquakes registered near Kuril Islands in past day

No tsunami warning was issued. Earth tremors were not felt in populated localities

YUZHO-SAKHALINSK, August 4. /TASS/. Three moderate magnitude earthquakes were registered in Russia’s Far Eastern Kuril Islands in the past day, a spokesman for the Sakhalin region department of the Russian emergencies ministry said on Thursday.

"The first earthquake of a magnitude 4.5 was registered at 10:33 a.m. Sakhalin time. The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean some 145 kilometers southeast of the city of Kurilsk (Iturup Island). The second earth tremor of a magnitude of 4.6 occurred at 16:33 local time some 85 kilometers southwest of the city of Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island). The third quake was registered at 21:22 local time. Its epicenter was located 163 kilometers southeast of Kurilsk," the spokesman said.

No tsunami warning was issued. Earth tremors were not felt in populated localities, the spokesman added.
