European Parliament hands over posthumous Jean Rey prize to Nemtsov’s daughter
The Jean Rey Prize is awarded to a political figure, scientist, academician or economist of international standing for their humanist and universal qualities
BRUSSELS, March 1. /TASS/. The daughter of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov, killed last year in Moscow, on Tuesday received her father’s posthumous Jean Rey prize from the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), Guy Verhofstadt.
Zhanna Nemtsova took the prize following the conference in the European Parliament dedicated to the anniversary of Nemtsov's death, held in Brussels on March 1.
The prize of €10,000 will go to the Nemtsov Foundation established by his daughter.
The Jean Rey Prize is awarded to a political figure, scientist, academician or economist of international standing for their humanist and universal qualities.
This award is a tribute to Jean Rey who illustrated liberal thinking. He was President of the Commission of the European Communities, and was elected to the European parliament on the first elections of its members by popular vote in 1979.
Nemtsov, former deputy prime minister under then-President Boris Yeltsin, and co-chairman of the Parnas party and deputy of the Yaroslavl regional duma, was killed in downtown Moscow late on February 27, 2015. Sever (North) battalion officer Ruslan Mukhudinov was charged in absentia for organizing the murder.
