SOCHI, February 7. /TASS/. The sports facilities and infrastructures made for the Winter Olympic Games in 2014, are used actively in Sochi, the city’s Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov told TASS on Sunday.

On February 7, Russia celebrates the 2nd anniversary of the Winter XXII Olympic and XI Paralympic Games by organizing the Winter Sports Day in Sochi, where the Games took place in 2014. The Day’s events will feature over one million participants throughout the country.

From the time the Olympic Games in Sochi were closed, the sport facilities have hosted over 400 sports and leisure events of international, national and regional levels, where the audience made over 2.5 million people.

"Sochi has become a city of events tourism - every year we host up to 200 various events," the mayor said.

This year, the city will host about 180 events, including: Russia’s Grand Prix of Formula 1 (April 29 - May 1), Russia - ASEAN summit (May 19-20,), tour of the Cirque du Soleil (June 2-5), World Choir Games, formerly named the Choir Olympics (July 6-26), the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016 (September 21-25). Besides, the resort city will host more than 340 training events in 48 kinds of sports.

Post-Olympic records

Within two years after the Games, Sochi has become the most popular resort with Russians. In 2015, growth of the tourist inflow made more than 6% - over 6 million tourists visited the city.

Thanks to the Games, the city received new hotels offering 24,000 rooms.

"In 2015, the city budget’s expenses on maintaining the Olympic infrastructures topped almost 660 million rubles," the mayor said. Clearly, the infrastructures do not only require expenses from the budget, but also added to the revenues in bigger tax returns. The revenues from hotels and accommodation facilities exceeded 650 million rubles, thus having shown 102% growth year-on-year.

In February, the hotel rooms may be sold out, as already now, in the beginning of month, demand is above the offering.

"On the second anniversary of the Games’ opening, which is also an official opening of the alpine routes, we expect overbooking, as now the demand is above the hotels’ capacities," a mountainous resort told TASS.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin greeted participants in festive events devoted to the 2nd anniversary of the Winter XXII Olympic and XI Paralympic Games on the Winter Sports Day on Sunday. "Exactly two years ago the Olympic flame went on in Sochi. All the country had been preparing for the event, and we are proud to have organized the best Olympic Games in history. We made unique sports facilities, modern transport, resort and leisure infrastructures," the greeting read.
