Russian PM presents Philippines with bear sculpture
MANILA, November 16. /TASS/. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has presented a 530-kilogramme bronze sculpture of a bear to the Philippines, currently hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
The bear has been placed in the park of sculptures in the capital, Manila, grounds open since 1996 when the southeast Asian nation hosted the APEC summit. Sculptures in the park are gifts from APEC member states.
"As the Russian Federation first took part in the APEC summit in 1998, our country is not represented in the park," a member of the Russian delegation said. "During preparations for the 2015 summit in Manila, the Philippines proposed that Russia adds its sculpture to the APEC collection."
The sculpture of the bear, a traditional symbol of Russia, was selected as a result. Prime Minister Medvedev's surname comes from the Russian word 'medved', meaning bear.
