Hungry bears on the prowl in Russia's Far Eastern towns

The creatures are said to be circling the populated localities due to food shortage in their natural habitat

VLADIVOSTOK, October 19. /TASS/. Another plight has befallen Ussuri district in Russia’s Far East: hungry brown bears spotted prowling the streets just two months after the area was ravaged by typhoon Goni, local officials said on Monday.

Reports tell of a female bear and two cubs pacing through Vozdvizhenka village as other predators were spotted in the city of Ussuriisk, population 168,000. The creatures are said to be circling Far East localities due to food shortage in their natural habitat.

Eight people have been injured after brushing with bears and one person killed in the Far East since the beginning of the year. Six aggressive animals were shot dead.

The population of brown and Himalayan bears is said to have increased to 2,500 and 3,000 in recent years.
