A local deputy proposed public hearings on the museum’s renaming in order to restore historical justice, as the building and artworks were seized from the owner's family in 1921 by Soviet authorities

KIEV, September 29. /TASS/. The Kiev National Museum of Russian Art may be renamed to Tereshchenko Gallery at the request of the family, which owned the museum’s building and collections before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, a deputy of the city council said on Tuesday.

Elena Yeskina proposed holding public hearings on the museum’s renaming in order "to restore historical justice, as the building and all artworks were seized from Tereshchenko family in 1921 by Soviet authorities."

She said that the family had no claims for the museum’s property and was just seeking its renbaming.

"The museum’s administration stands against renaming," Yeskina said.

The Kiev Museum of Russian Art opened in 1922 boasts the largest collection of Russian paintings, drawings and sculptures in Ukraine.
