Around 37,000 families are awaiting shelter assistance

UNITED NATIONS, November 5. /TASS/. Nearly 310,000 people in Yemen have been forced to leave their homes since early August because of fighting, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

"Almost 310,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since the beginning of August in Yemen," the office noted. Providing shelter for displaced people remains "a pressing need." Around 37,000 families are awaiting shelter assistance, while 32,000 need basic household items. Since August, 28 temporary accommodation sites have opened or resumed operations, sheltering more than 20,000 people.

The city of Taiz is running out of essential goods, whose prices "have risen as much as fivefold," OCHA said. Waste collection has stopped because trucks cannot reach dumping sites. Rubbish is piling up across the city, increasing the risk of disease.

The UN called on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure safe, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access to those affected.

Armed conflict between the Houthis and government forces backed by Saudi Arabia has continued in Yemen since August 2014. In July 2026, the rebels announced a naval blockade of the kingdom and subsequently attacked several Saudi-owned oil tankers.

In early August, the Ansar Allah movement launched an offensive in southwestern Yemen. On September 10-11, it took control of the port city of Mokha and areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. On October 4, Yemeni government forces announced a large-scale military operation to retake rebel-held territory.
