Nearly 190 bears posing threat to people culled in Yakutia
A total of 345 decisions on population regulation have been issued, covering 620 animals
YAKUTSK, October 5. /TASS/. Specialists have culled nearly 190 bears posing a threat to the population in Yakutia, in far northeastern Russia, the regional Ecology Ministry said.
"As of today, measures taken have resulted in the culling of 188 brown bears that posed a real threat to the population. As of October 5, a total of 345 decisions on population regulation have been issued, covering 620 animals," the statement reads.
Earlier, Yakutia’s authorities submitted a proposal to the Russian Natural Resources Ministry on measures to regulate the bear population. The proposals include removing the brown bear from the list of hunting resources subject to quotas and extending hunting seasons in the Far East and Siberia. In addition, the deputy minister proposed allowing hunters with permits to hunt ungulates to also hunt brown bears, enabling incidental hunting.
