MOSCOW, August 11. /TASS/. An aircraft that may be carrying US citizen Robert Gilman, who was previously convicted in Russia and released on health grounds, made a stopover in Ireland, a source in European Union air traffic control services told TASS.

"The US-registered aircraft flying from Russia made a stopover at Shannon Airport in Ireland, where it spent slightly more than two and a half hours," the source said, adding that this airport is often used to refuel aircraft before flying over the Atlantic. "The aircraft is currently continuing its flight in westward direction," the source said.

Earlier, the source told TASS that this aircraft had left Russia and entered the European Union’s airspace from the Russian-Latvian border.

On August 11, US President Donald Trump announced that US serviceman Robert Gilman convicted in Russia had been released and was on his way home. In Trump’s words, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to release him "on a humanitarian basis," without exchanging him for any of Russians held in custody on the US territory. According to Reuters, Gilman, detained for drunk debauchery on a railway station in Central Russia’s Voronezh in 2022, is being brought to the United States aboard a special flight. Meanwhile, Associated Press reported that the US citizen will be taken to a hospital in Texas for medical examination and treatment.
