MOSCOW, December 25. /TASS/. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has thwarted a series of terrorist attacks in the Kaluga Region, including at a federal gas storage facility, that were being plotted by the Ukrainian special services, the press office told TASS.

"The Federal Security Service has thwarted a series of terrorist acts plotted by the Ukrainian special services in the Kaluga Region," the statement said. "As a result of the measures taken, a Kaluga resident born in 1976 and a native of Zaporozhye was identified as having planned to detonate homemade explosive devices at a federal gas storage facility and a defense enterprise parking lot on the orders of the Ukrainian special services," the FSB noted. To carry out the terrorist attacks, he manufactured about 80 kilograms of homemade explosives and incendiary devices, the press office added.

"During the attempt to detain him, the terrorist offered armed resistance and was killed in return fire. There were no casualties among law enforcement officers or the civilian population," the press office emphasized. A cache equipped by the Ukrainian special services was seized, containing 300 grams of foreign-made plastic explosives, two electric detonators, a PM pistol, and ammunition for it.

Investigators have opened a criminal case under Articles 30 and 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (Preparation for a Terrorist Act).

The first underground gas storage facility in the USSR was built in 1959 in the Kaluga Region and is now a Gazprom PCHG branch.
