Record heat grips Moscow, 16 more cities across Russia
As for Moscow, the previous record for this date was set in 1995, when the temperature reached 24.3 degrees Celsius
MOSCOW, April 23. /TASS/. Moscow set a new temperature record for April 23, as the thermometer hit 24.5 degrees Celsius (76.1 Fahrenheit) today in the Russian capital, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, told TASS.
"Moscow broke another record. At 3 p.m., the temperature at the VDNKh weather station was 24.5 degrees Celsius. But now it seems nature is done setting records," Vilfand said. He noted that the previous record for this date was set in 1995, when the temperature reached 24.3 degrees Celsius.
In addition to Moscow, 16 other Russian cities saw record-breaking temperatures on Tuesday. On April 22, multiple cities also experienced record highs: Moscow reached 23.4 degrees, Smolensk 26.5, Ryazan 26.6, Vladimir 26.4, Kursk 25.5, Orel 25.2, Belgorod 25.8, Lipetsk 26.6, Tambov 26.7, Voronezh 26.3, Saransk 25.9, Izhevsk 24.8, Ulyanovsk 26.5, and Saratov 26 degrees Celsius.
"The Urals have joined in on the fun too. On April 22, Yekaterinburg recorded plus 24 degrees - a record high. The oldest record to be broken was in Kursk: it was plus 24.8 in 1947, and today it was plus 25.5 degrees," Vilfand added.
Earlier, Vilfand had told TASS that April 23 was likely to break the capital’s temperature record — and this time, the forecast was on spot on.
