Sixteen detained as Georgian police disperse protesters in Tbilisi

Law enforcement officers began dispersing demonstrators on Tuesday morning

TBILISI, November 19. /TASS/. Georgian police have detained 16 people while dispersing a protest rally in the country’s capital, Tbilisi, an Interior Ministry spokesperson told TASS.

"Sixteen people have been detained administratively since this morning; three of them have already been released on their own recognizance," the official said.

Law enforcement officers began dispersing demonstrators on Tuesday morning. Protesters were forced from the avenue where they had been rallying for two days in front of the Tbilisi State University building. Opposition activists then moved to another avenue, and police were once again forced to use coercion against them

Georgia held its parliamentary elections on October 26. According to the Central Election Commission, the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party received 53.93% of the vote, securing 89 out of 150 seats in parliament. Four opposition parties crossed the five-percent threshold, including Coalition for Change, which received 11.03% of the vote and 19 seats, Unity-National Movement (10.17% and 16 seats), Strong Georgia (8.81% and 14 seats), and Gakharia for Georgia (7.78% and 12 seats). All opposition parties that entered parliament refused to recognize the election results, claiming they had been manipulated. Opposition leaders have been holding protest rallies since November 4.
