Rare bird species settling in Moscow’s natural areas
Gray herons, black kites, blue hawks, and popinjay honey buzzards are among them
MOSCOW, November 11. /TASS/. Rare bird species, once thought to be extinct, have settled in Moscow again, as reported by the official website of the Moscow mayor and government.
"Birds once considered extinct in the region have settled in the capital. Gray herons, black kites, blue hawks, and popinjay honey buzzards are among them," the website states.
Specialists from the nature management department recorded these birds and observed an increase in biodiversity in Moscow’s designated natural areas. In the first half of 2024, 154 bird species were recorded, including seventy from Moscow’s Red Book. Biologists noted the appearance of peregrine falcons, fish hawks, lesser spotted eagles, and mandarin ducks in the city. This indicates an improvement in the environmental situation in the capital, according to the report.
