WASHINGTON, March 18. /TASS/. The number of Americans who consider Russia and China to be the primary threats to the US has declined since last year, according to a Gallup poll.

As many as 41% of respondents believe China to be the US’ main enemy as of today, while 26% said it was Russia. Last year’s figures were 50% and 3% correspondingly.

Republicans are more prone to calling China the main enemy, while democrats see Russia as a bigger threat. As many as 67% of republicans and 18% democrats called China the main threat to the US. For Russia, it was 48% of democrats and 10% of republicans.

The survey also found that Russia and North Korea have the lowest approval ratings among Americans, at 8% and 9% correspondingly. The highest approval ratings belonged to Canada and Japan, both coming in at 83%.

According to Gallup, more Americans now consider Iran to be a major threat than they did in 2023 - now the figure stands at 9%, up from 2% last year. As many as 4% of those surveyed chose North Korea as the main enemy, slightly less than in 2023, 3 percentage points (p. p.) lower. Besides, 5% of Americans viewed the US itself as the primary threat (4%.higher than in 2023). Sociologists noted that this is the highest figure since 2005. Israel and Ukraine are considered by 2% of respondents each to be the main threat to the US, and the Middle East and Iraq by 1% each. Last year, these countries and the region did not make the list.

The survey was conducted among 1,016 adult Americans from February 1 to 20.
