More than half of German citizens stand behind Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision not to send long-range Taurus cruise missiles capable of striking targets on Russian soil to Ukraine, according to the results of a poll conducted by the Forsa sociological service at the request of RTL and NTV TV channels.
Thus, 56% of those polled believe that Germany should not supply Ukraine with these precision weapons. As many as 35% of respondents expressed the opposite opinion.
In addition, 28% of respondents believe what Berlin is currently giving Kiev is excessive. Thus, 39% of respondents said it was the right amount, and 30% - insufficient.
The survey was conducted from February 23 to 24. 1,009 people took part in it. The margin of error was 3%.
On Monday, Scholz announced he would not send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, justifying his decision by saying that he did not want his country to be drawn drawn into the conflict. The chancellor called his decision final, noting that he was very annoyed by the Taurus debate, as this is not what Ukraine really needs. In Scholz's view, Ukraine is primarily short of ammunition and the Taurus is "not crucial."
On February 22, the Bundestag (the German parliament) supported a resolution from the ruling party factions (the Social Democratic Party of Germany - SPD, the Greens, and the Free Democratic Party - FDP, Liberal) calling for the transfer of long-range weapons to Ukraine. At the same time, the Bundestag voted down a resolution proposed by a faction of the opposition Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc. In it, the conservatives specifically demanded that the Taurus be delivered to Ukraine.
