Russian movie theaters post total 2023 box office take of nearly $443 mln — deputy premier
"This figure virtually matches the pre-pandemic period, when both Hollywood and European movies were prevalent in Russia’s cinema market," Tatyana Golikova noted
MOSCOW, December 28. /TASS/. Total box office receipts earned by Russian cinemas in 2023 will exceed 40 bln rubles (about $443 mln), Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, who chairs the Cinema Foundation of Russia’s board of trustees, said.
"We estimate the aggregate receipts for Russian cinemas in 2023 to be more than 40 bln rubles (about $443 mln). This figure virtually matches the pre-pandemic period, when both Hollywood and European movies were prevalent in Russia’s cinema market. And what is rather important, 28 bln [rubles] of this figure is attributable to domestic Russian films," she said at a TASS news conference.
Earlier, Association of Cinema Owners head Alexey Voronkov said that Russian cinemas will be able to close out 2023 with total revenues of 35 bln rubles (almost $389 mln), 75% of which will come from screenings of Russian films.
"I think that when we summarize the results of 2024, the volume of our film market will have increased even more, because we see how seriously the Russian cinema industry is growing," Golikova added.
