Formulations of COP28 final declaration in nature of compromise — Russian envoy
Edelgeriyev also noted that during the talks the Russian delegation warned against a random refusal of fossil fuel
DUBAI, December 13. /TASS/. The formulations of the final declaration of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) are in the nature of a compromise, head of Russia’s delegation, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Ruslan Edelgeriyev said.
"The final document urges to contribute to global common efforts on transition from fossil fuels in energy systems, importantly, on a fair and well-ordered transition that considers the variety of national conditions. <…> Final formulations are hardly fine for all, though it only confirms that the agreements reached are in the nature of a compromise," he said.
Edelgeriyev also noted that during the talks the Russian delegation warned against a random refusal of fossil fuel. "We used every opportunity to point to the consequences of a chaotic rejection of coal, oil and gas unsupported by science in light of the events of the past several years," he stressed.
On Wednesday, the Conference of the Parties, the head body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, passed the declaration summarizing the first Global Stocktake focused on reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement. The document does not contain a provision to gradually phase out fossil fuels. Instead, the key part of the agreement stipulates measures to reduce emissions, and calls for a transition away from fossil fuels.
