Thousands of people rally in support of Palestine in Sydney
The main demand of the protesters was an immediate ceasefire in Gaza
SYDNEY, November 19. /TASS/. Tens of thousands of Australians rallied in support of Palestine in Sydney, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.
Tens of thousands of Palestinian supporters and those calling for an immediate ceasefire in the country gathered in Sydney's central park to rally and march to protest what is happening in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The protesters demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The rally was supported by more than a hundred Muslim communities and some Australian trade unions, as well as a number of socialist socio-political organizations.
As the organizing committee of the rally, organized by the Palestine Action Group (PAG), said, the demonstrations taking place in Sydney every week should be a clear signal to the Australian government and other countries that immediate action is needed to end the war.
The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated following an incursion of Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip into Israel on October 7. Hamas regards the attack as a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Israel has declared a complete siege of the Gaza Strip and has started delivering strikes on that area and parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
