Russian national Ukrainsky released from US prison, returns to Russia
Dmitry Ukrainsky was charged with e-fraud and money laundering
MOSCOW, November 7. /TASS/. Russian national Dmitry Ukrainsky, who was convicted in the United States of financial crimes and hacking, has been released from a US jail and has returned to Russia, Ivan Melnikov, vice president of the Russian arm of the International Human Rights Commission, told TASS on Tuesday.
"Ukrainsky has already arrived in Russia. His plane has landed at an airport on Russian territory," he said.
Ukrainsky was charged with e-fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors wanted the maximum of 20 years at sentencing. "But due to a lack of any evidence of Ukrainsky’s involvement in this offense and thanks to the efforts of his attorneys, human rights activists and the Russian foreign ministry, prosecutors were able to get only five years in jail for Ukrainsky. The court ruled to count the time he had spent in a Thai prison as time served and the man was released," Melnikov said.
Ukrainsky was sentenced in Thailand to ten years behind bars on charges of stealing Americans’ money and embezzling it to Thailand. The man denied his guilt. The court verdict came into force in 2019 and Ukrainsky was to be given early parole under Thai law. Later, a Thai court upheld an extradition request from the United States.
