UNITED NATIONS, September 23. /TASS/. Quran burnings, the abuse of the Torah and the persecution of Orthodox Christians have literally been put on stream in the European Union, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the General Debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

"However, the West still considers itself superior to the rest of mankind in line with top EU diplomat Josep Borrell’s remark about Europe being a garden and the rest of the world a jungle. He is not embarrassed by the fact that the garden is full of Islamophobia and other forms of hate for the traditional values of all world religions," he pointed out. "Quran burnings, the abuse of the Torah, the persecution of Orthodox priests and other forms of mockery of the religious feelings of believers have literally been put on stream in Europe," Lavrov added.

The burning of the Quran took place during a police-authorized demonstration in downtown Stockholm on June 28. Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi immigrant, tore pages from the Quran and set it on fire. On that day, Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s major religious holidays. In July, members of the Danish Patriots far-right group burned copies of the Quran in front of the embassies of Turkey, Egypt and Iraq in Copenhagen.
