Lawmaker suggests introducing siesta during heat waves in Russia’s southern regions
Leonid Slutsky noted that his proposal was connected with the fact that in hot weather people have a higher risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure
VOLGOGRAD, August 8. /TASS/. During his working trip to Volgograd, LDPR leader Leonid Slutsky proposed testing out an idea where workers take siestas to combat the hot weather in southern regions of Russia. He voiced this initiative at a meeting with Volgograd Region Governor Andrey Bocharov.
“We need to consider the possibility, at least temporarily, of introducing a special working regime in the southern regions of Russia, where the heat may be prolonged. For example, to provide for a siesta, when employees can go home during the hottest part of the day for 3-4 hours. Or transfer some employees to remote work. Or introduce a 4-day work schedule so that workers have more time to recover. This will also help relieve traffic,” he said.
The LDPR leader noted that his proposal was connected with the fact that in hot weather people have a higher risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure.
On Tuesday, a delegation of LDPR deputies headed by Leonid Slutsky arrived in Volgograd, which has been seeing temperatures rise above 40 degrees Celsius (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for several days. The delegation laid flowers on the Mamaev Kurgan, and they plan to visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Titan-Barrikady plant, meet with relatives of mobilized people, as well as with LDPR activists.
Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, told TASS earlier that a heat wave of 40-43 degrees Celsius (up to 110 Fahrenheit) is expected in the Krasnodar region, as well as the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Rostov and Stavropol regions in the coming days, while in the Belgorod, Kursk, Orel, Ryazan and Tambov regions the temperature will rise to plus 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit).
