Attempts to cancel Russian culture failed, says official

Dmitry Polikanov stressed that he had recently observed "the return to normality"

BELGRADE, April 5. /TASS/. Statements about the cancellation of Russian culture were premature as Russian culture is impossible to cancel. All such attempts failed, Deputy Head of Russia’s agency for international humanitarian cooperation Dmitry Polikanov told TASS on Wednesday.

"Statements about the cancellation of Russian culture were premature. Russian culture is impossible to cancel," the deputy head of Rossotrudnichestvo (the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation) pointed out. Polikanov stressed that he had recently observed "the return to normality." "Common sense starts to prevail. The attempts to cancel Russian culture have failed, thank God," he said.

The Russian Center of Science and Culture in Belgrade celebrates its 90th anniversary. The oldest Russian House in the world was founded in 1933 on the funds of the 40,000 refugees living in Belgrade after the revolution. The Russian House was the center of the social, cultural, scientific and religious life of Russian immigrants. It was visited on a daily basis by over 2,000 people.

After World War II the Russian House was renamed the Home of Soviet Culture. It existed under this name until the early 1990s. In 1994, the center continued its work under its present name. Today, the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Belgrade is a Rossotrudnichestvo representative office in Serbia.
