Coronavirus epidemic appears to be nearing its end — Russian virologist

According to the expert, case count remains relatively low in Russia and worldwide

MOSCOW, March 8. /TASS/. The novel coronavirus epidemic appears to be nearing its end, although the emergence of new variants of the virus cannot be ruled out, senior researcher Anatoly Altshtein of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology has told TASS.

"There is absolutely no reason to panic. The epidemic is nearing its end, although, of course, the emergence of new variants with increased transmissibility cannot be ruled out. But things appear to be relatively calm at the moment. A certain decline in cases and deaths is observed everywhere around the world," the virologist said.

According to the expert, case count remains relatively low in Russia and worldwide.

"The situation reached its plateau long ago. Cases ceased to grow in late February and remained at the same level for quite a while. Clearly, the case count is high compared to January’s figures, but, in general, it is low," he said. "Mortality is also low, so nothing serious is happening in Russia at the moment. The epidemics still continues, with minor surges and declines, and there is nothing terrible about it."

A total of 1,801 coronavirus cases were registered in Russia on Tuesday, compared to 615 a day earlier (up 192.8%).
