German national detained in Munich on suspicion of ties with Russian intel agencies

The statement noted that Arthur E. was not a BND employee

BERLIN, January 26. /TASS/. A German national was detained by police at the Munich airport on suspicion of high treason and ties with Russian intelligence agencies, the German Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement on Thursday.

The man, identified as Arthur E., is believed to be an associate of German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) officer Carsten L., detained earlier on the same suspicion. According to the prosecution, Carsten L. provided classified information to Arthur E., who "delivered it to Russia to pass it on to intelligence agencies."

The statement noted that Arthur E. was not a BND employee. He was detained upon arriving from the United States. The investigation was conducted with the support of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Carsten L. was detained in late December 2022. According to media reports, he worked in the BND’s analytical department and had access to information obtained through wiretaps, which was shared with the BND by other Western intelligence agencies.
