Ukraine to remove War and Peace from school curriculum — official

It is stated that school curricula in Ukraine are expected to be modified to reinforce patriotic education

KIEV, June 7. /TASS/. Ukraine plans to remove Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace from school curriculum as the novel is seen praising the Russian military, Ukraine’s First Deputy Education Minister Andrey Vitrenko said on Tuesday.

He said many books by Russian writers are planned to be removed from the curriculum of Ukrainian schools. "Well, for example, things like War and Peace, that’s something that won’t be studied in Ukraine anymore," he was quoted as saying by the UNIAN news service. According to the official, everything that glorifies the Russian military "will disappear from the foreign literature curriculum."

He said that school curricula in Ukraine are expected to be modified to reinforce patriotic education. Some classes will be dedicated to mine clearance and the teaching of national and world history will also undergo changes.

On April 6, the country’s legislature registered a bill that would prohibit giving places in Ukrainian cities names that are associated with Russia, its history and public figures. The authorities of some Ukrainian cities have recently talked about renaming street names associated with Russia and the USSR, as well as taking Soviet symbols off monuments.
