Coronavirus incidence may grow until establishment of herd immunity, expert says

"It is difficult to name any deadlines," Deputy Director for Clinical Research of the Gabrichevsky Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology Tatyana Ruzhentsova noted

MOSCOW, October 21. /TASS/. An increase in the incidence of the coronavirus infection in Russia may continue until the necessary level of herd immunity is reached, Deputy Director for Clinical Research of the Gabrichevsky Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Tatyana Ruzhentsova told TASS.

"The growth of the number of those infected may continue until herd immunity is formed, so far residents do not comply with recommendations that prevent the spread of the infection. It is difficult to name any deadlines. We very much hope to see the results of the increase in the number of those vaccinated and the introduction of restrictive measures in November," she said.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that the situation with the coronavirus in Russia was becoming more complicated due to insufficient inoculation rates and the failure to observe the restrictive measures. According to her, over the past week alone, the incidence in the country has increased by 15.5%, while in 35 regions it surpasses the national average. Out of 276,500 hospital beds for coronavirus patients in Russia, 86.6% are already in use while in 27 regions over 90% of such beds are occupied.
