Hainan's Sanya approves special conservation status for ancient trees

The Sanya administration plans to set up 18 public parks in the city over the next five years

SANYA, April 2. /TASS/. Hainan's Sanya administration has published a list of 904 specially protected trees that have been growing in the territory of this city for more than a century. According to the "Sanya Daily", these are "green long-livers" aged from 100 to 300 years.

In particular, such samples of tropical flora as Indian tamarind, Chukrasia plankton, cotton tree and poisonous anchar were included in the list. The city authorities have assigned them the status of the second level of protection of rare trees.

According to the resolution of the Sanya administration, it is strictly forbidden to cut down and replant them without permission, and it is also impossible to remove the bark and dig up the roots. In addition, when creating urban infrastructure or carrying out industrial activities, it is necessary to take into account the risks that can lead to their death.

China has a three-tier protection system for perennial and valuable trees. As a rule, the first level includes those over 500 years old, the second — from 300 to 499 years, and the third — from 100 to 299 years. At the same time, age restrictions do not apply to valuable representatives of the flora, which are of important cultural, historical or scientific significance.

The Sanya administration plans to set up 18 public parks in the city over the next five years. There will be recreation areas with both evergreen tropical vegetation and plants that are found mainly in monsoon forests and shed their foliage in the dry season.
