China reports seven new positive cases of novel coronavirus over past day

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in mainland China has reached 89,831

BEIJING, February 21. /TASS/. Seven positive coronavirus cases were reported in China in the past 24 hours, the State Committee on Health and Hygiene of China said in a statement on Sunday.

The Chinese official body reported zero deaths from the novel coronavirus, adding that 38 people were discharged from hospitals.

The statement also reported six asymptomatic COVID-19 cases that were registered in the country over the past day.

According to the latest data, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in mainland China has reached 89,831, with 4,636 fatalities and 84,772 recoveries. There are currently 423 active coronavirus cases in the country, with two patients in serious condition, the authorities said.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 111,640,250 people have been infected worldwide and more than 2,471,460 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 86,808,690 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.
