About 96% of fatal outcomes of pneumonia recorded in young children, expert says

More than 95% of fatal outcomes of community-acquired pneumonia are registered among young children, Deputy Director for Research of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Alexander Gorelov reported on Wednesday.
"It is important to stress that 96% of fatal outcomes are among children of an early age," he said at a seminar on diagnostics, therapy and prevention of flu and acute respiratory infections.
He noted that the incidence of pneumonia among children in Russia is rather high and makes up over 762 cases per 100,000 residents, while the death rate due to pneumonia ranges within 0.5-0.64%. Additionally, according to the World Health Organization, about 1 mln children died of pneumonia in 2019. "Risk groups include children under five years of age, especially under two years of age, pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy, adult children with the history of bronchial asthma, neurological diseases, chronic conditions of lungs, cardiovascular system, blood disorders, endocrine disorders, diseases of kidneys, liver, the metabolic syndrome," the expert added. According to him, young children predominantly have pneumonia with viral etiology, while diseases of bacterial origin occur more often among children over five years of age.
