Yamal to publish regional history book for school students

Russia’s well-known ethnologist and anthropologist Andrei Golovnev will lead a team of experts, working on the new book

TASS, February 4. A book on Yamal’s history and culture will be supplied to the regional schools in 2022, the Yamal government’s press service said on Wednesday.

"Yamal’s Development Institute has begun working on a book - History and Culture of Yamal - for pupils of 5-11 grades," the press service said. "Students of the 5th grade will have the new book in 2022, and students of other grades will have the books in 2023."

Russia’s well-known ethnologist and anthropologist Andrei Golovnev will lead a team of experts, working on the new book. The experts will represent scientific and research institutions in Salekhard, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Tyumen.

"We want to make a book, which will be interesting for children, and thus we shall use modern formats in addition to texts," the press service quoted Yamal’s Education Development Institute’s Director Alexei Fomin as saying. "We shall use QR codes, 3D images, augmented reality and interactive maps."

The Yamalo-Nenets Region was established in 1930. It is located mostly north of the Arctic Circle, and the other part is on the slope of the Urals ridge. The climate is cold. Some areas have the perennially frozen soils. The cold Kara Sea is nearby. Winters in the region continue for up to eight months.
