Moscow reports record low COVID-19 reproduction rate, daily cases

The capital city saw 2,452 coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, according to the anti-coronavirus crisis center

MOSCOW, January 20. /TASS/. Moscow’s coronavirus reproduction rate dropped on Wednesday from 0.75 to 0.65, the lowest figure during the pandemic, according to TASS estimates based on the anti-coronavirus crisis center’s data.

In Russia in general, that number dropped from 0.97 to 0.93, the lowest figure since January 7.

The COVID-19 reproduction rate exceeds 1.0 in three regions with the highest numbers of confirmed cases. These are the Nizhny Novgorod and Arkhangelsk regions (1.01 and 1.05 respectively) and St. Petersburg (1.07).

The reproduction rate equals 1.0 in two more regions, specifically, the Rostov and Sverdlovsk regions.

In the Voronezh and Krasnoyarsk regions, that figure stood at 0.99 on Monday, in the Irkutsk Region it was 0.98, while in the Moscow Region it dropped to 0.93.

The coronavirus reproduction rate shows the number of people one patient can infect before being isolated. Along with other criteria, it was used to define the regions’ readiness for a step-by-step removal of restrictions imposed last spring to combat the epidemic. Now this rate is used, in particular, to make decisions on resuming regular passenger service with other countries.

According to the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing’s recommendations, the borders with a particular country may be opened if the coronavirus reproduction rate there does not exceed 1 for a week.
