Men die of coronavirus 30% more often than women, scientist says

These conclusions were drawn from research publications on the incidence of the coronavirus infection worldwide, the expert explained

MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. Men die of complications caused by the coronavirus infection 30% more often than women, Director of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Clinic Armais Kamalov said at an online meeting of the academic board of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the subject of COVID-19 and reproductive health on Wednesday.

These conclusions were drawn from research publications on the incidence of the coronavirus infection worldwide, he explained.

"Per each 10 women we have 11 cases of incidence among men. 12 men are hospitalized, and already 18 stay at an intensive care unit. The mortality, unfortunately, is at 15 compared to women. This means that men died and die 30% more often," he said.

The scientist also noted that women are less susceptible to viruses due to innate immunity properties and the endocrine profile. "Women normally register a higher level of protective antibodies compared to men," the expert concluded.

According to the latest global statistics, over 55.6 mln people have been infected worldwide and more than 1.3 mln deaths have been reported. To date, 1,991,998 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 1,501,083 patients having recovered from the disease. Russia’s latest data indicates 34,387 fatalities nationwide. Earlier, the Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation.
