The region also plans to build a museum of the Arctic
TASS, April 7. The first Arctic zoo, where animals are kept in natural environment, and a museum of Arctic will appear in the Yamalo-Nenets Region, Governor Dmitry Artukhov said in an interview with TASS on Tuesday.
"We want to open the first Arctic zoo. <…> No huge heated buildings, just one building, which will be used for offices, cafes, and souvenir shops," he said. "All animals are in the natural environment, and we shall use most effectively the natural landscape."
The region also plans to build a museum of the Arctic.
"We shall build a new museum of the Arctic. We have been working on the project jointly with an international team of experts," the governor said. "The museum will become a beautiful part of Salekhard’s embankment."
The Yamalo-Nenets Region was formed in 1930. The region’s most part is north of the Arctic Circle, and some areas are on the slope of the Urals ridge. The climate is cold. Permafrost remains in some parts. The cold Kara Sea is very close. Winters continue for eight months. In the Arctic part, winters are frosty, with snow storms, fogs, and even in the southern part summers are never longer than 100 days (in the Arctic and sub-Arctic parts - not longer than 68 days).
