Hainan to introduce separate waste collection in four cities

The local authorities also intend to conduct a number of additional steps to preserve the environment

HAIKOU, January 19. /TASS/. The Hainan government plans to introduce separate waste collection in four cities at a district level and intends to take a number of additional measures to protect the environment in 2020, the Hainan Daily reported, citing materials published during the third session of the Assembly of People’s Representatives.

Separate waste collection will be introduced in Haikou (the administrative center of the region), Sanya, Sansha and Danzhou. Moreover, the authorities will create marine stations for environmental monitoring of water conditions, as well as build four waste incineration plants.

The government also noted that they would also be focused on carbon dioxide emissions by road transport, the use of firecrackers and fireworks, and the pollution of rivers and lakes in settlements.

The introduction of the mandatory system of separate collection of household waste is currently being worked out in many Chinese regions. Shanghai is the first city in the country where, at a legislative level, the sorting of waste before its delivery to the collection points was introduced. The relevant rules came into force in June, 2019. Both individuals and legal entities can be fined for violation.
