Sanya and St Petersburg launch direct flights

Last year, 76 million Chinese and foreign tourists (255,000 of those being Russian citizens) visited the island

SANYA, October 12. /TASS/. Direct air flights were launched between St. Petersburg and China's Sanya. According to the Hainan Daily newspaper, the route is served by the Russian carrier Azur Air.

The first Boeing 767-300 with 334 passengers on board arrived from St. Petersburg at the Sanya Phoenix International Airport on October 8 at 03:00 am local time (22:00 October 7, Moscow time).

According to the news outlet, the opening of a regular route between the two cities will further promote Sanya as an international resort city, develop Hainan's transport network, as well as promote business and friendly contacts between residents of the Chinese resort and St. Petersburg.

The Hainan authorities set the goal of turning the province into an "international center for tourism and consumption" by 2025. Last year, 76 million Chinese and foreign tourists (255,000 of those being Russian citizens) visited the island.

Since May 2018, the island has a visa-free travel for foreign tourists from 59 countries - new conditions apply to both tourist groups and individual travelers. Among the countries on the list are Russia, UK, France, Germany, US and others. In order to ensure the stability of passenger flows, the Hainan authorities are actively developing air transport cooperation - last year Hainan launched 74 new international flights.
