Hainan authorities declare full 5G coverage on the island

Since the start of issuing commercial licenses for using 5G networks in China, Hainan has launched a pilot project for the widespread implementation of the fifth generation technology

HAIKOU, October 12. /TASS/. Hainan authorities by September 2019 installed 507 basic 5G network stations on the island fully covering the region with fifth generation connection, head of industry and informatization department Wang Jing said. 

"In September we installed 507 5G network stations on the island", a media outlet quotes Wang Jing as saying. "It enabled us to fully cover Hainan with fifth generation network connection". 

The official noted that currently the Hainan authorities are supporting the widespread implementation of 5G - the technologies are already being used in key industries, healthcare, education, culture and tourism. The plans include active use of 5G in airports, seaports, the island's large transportation hubs, and in the electricity production field.

Wang Jing also said that since the start of issuing commercial licenses for using 5G networks in China, Hainan has launched a pilot project for the widespread implementation of the fifth generation technology. "This will contribute to the province's social and economic development, its intellectual, digital transformation and, undoubtedly, the development of the digital economy on the island," the official pointed out.

On June 6, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Informatization of China issued the first licenses for the commercial use of 5G networks. Three largest mobile operators of the country, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and the broadcasting corporation China Broadcasting Network received the licenses. According to the Chinese Academy of Information and Communication Technology, 5G  will create 10.6 trillion yuan (about $ 1.54 trillion) of GDP additionally and 3 million jobs from 2020 to 2025 in the country.
