Moscow warns justifying extremists to fight autocratic regimes leads to color revolutions

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov voiced the concerns at the OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism conference

BRATISLAVA, Macrh 25. /TASS/. Justifying actions of terrorists and extremists on the pretext of fighting authoritarian regimes opens the door to color revolutions, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov said on Monday at the OSCE-wide Counter-Terrorism conference.

"We are concerned by the continuing erosion of the basis for counter-terrorism cooperation that is promoted by some of our partners by advancing the issue of preventing violent extremism," said the diplomat.

According to Syromolotov, the main document of former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism still hasn’t been adopted and is not subject to compulsory implementation by states. Moreover, the plan does not determine what violent extremism constitutes, the diplomat stressed.

"We have repeatedly drawn attention to the fact that the concept of preventing violent extremism makes it possible to justify actions of terrorists and extremists on various pretexts, for instance, fighting against authoritarian regimes and their exclusion from the mechanisms of criminal prosecution," Syromolotov noted. "This will foster protest sentiments in society and will pave the way for color revolutions.".
