Anton Kobets was among the five people detained over a failed plot to blow up the landmark cathedral in Russia’s second largest city
ST. PETERSBURG, November 28. /TASS/. The Moscow District Military Court ruled on Tuesday that Anton Kobets, suspected of plotting a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg’s Kazan Cathedral last year, be cleared of criminal responsibility and that compulsory medical measures be applied to him.
"The suspect was cleared of criminal responsibility, with compulsory medical measures being applied to him," the joint news service of St. Petersburg courts reported in its Telegram channel.
Kobets was among the five people detained over a failed plot to blow up the landmark cathedral in Russia’s second largest city. According to investigators, the terrorist cell scheduled their suicide bombing attack for December 16, 2017. They also planned to carry out mass killings and bomb explosions at other locations on the same day.
The main suspect in the case, English language teacher Yevgeny Yefimov, was found guilty of preparing the blast, and sentenced to five year in a high-security prison and a fine of 100,000 rubles. Yefimov pleaded guilty to all charges. His mother informed the police about the terrorist plot and helped to thwart the attack.
The court established that Kobets helped Yefimov and advised him to choose the Kazan Cathedral as the site of the future attack.
