Siberian scientists obtain magnetic particles for medicinal applications
The ferrihydrite is formed in the course of bacterial activity and located on the cellular surface as the aggregations of nanograins
MOSCOW, July 12. /TASS/ Scientists from the Siberian Federal University (SFU) and Krasnoyarsk Research Center have developed a technology to produce magnetic nanoparticles of ferrihydrite for medical applications, the SFU press service said.
The ferrihydrite is formed in the course of bacterial activity and located on the cellular surface as the aggregations of nanograins. The special features of these nanoparticles obtained via bacterial synthesis could be applied in medicine, e.g. for magneto-controlled address drug delivery when the medicinal agent is attached to the nanoparticle and then relocated to the treatment spot by the focused magnetic field.
"On the one hand, it is carrying magnetic properties which points the above-described nanoparticles as very perspective driven carriers. On the other hand, due to their biogenic nature, these nanoparticles are absolutely safe for the human body," said one of the project team members, Alexander Krasikov.
The scientists note that the address delivery leads to lowering the input drug dosage and minimization of side effects to the body if compared to the traditional ways of medication.
