Russian scientists evaluate carbon sequestration by forests
The ecosystem model will reflect indicators of soil respiration, phytomass reserve, photo synthesizing activity of dominant species, and illumination of forest layers
NOVOSIBIRSK, April 9. /TASS/. Researchers from the Climatic Center of the Novosibirsk State University are dealing with development of a single model of a natural forest ecosystem to evaluate efficiency of carbon storage and sequestration, the university’s press service told TASS.
"The main task tackled by Center employees is to measure and monitor flows of greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide and methane. Center employees are using a wide range of modern laboratory and field equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles," the press service noted.
The ecosystem model will reflect indicators of soil respiration, phytomass reserve, photo synthesizing activity of dominant species, and illumination of forest layers.
The principal task of the Climatic Center of the University is to determine the efficiency of forest ecosystems, either natural or artificial, from the standpoint of carbon depositing.
