Russian scientists locate presumed ‘hibernation switch’ in human brain
The discovery was made as part of the research to find ways of making hibernation possible for humans
MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. A group of Russian scientists has located a presumed ‘switch’ in the human brain that can make the body go into a condition similar to hibernation, a leading Russian scientist has told TASS.
"A likely switch that can turn the dormancy mode on and off has been located. It is a group of neurons in hypothalamus," said Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yuri Bubeyev, who is the deputy head of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of sciences.
The discovery was made as part of the research to find ways of making hibernation possible for humans and thus paving the way for lengthy missions to the far space.
The research was carried out as part of the institute’s contract with Russian space agency Roscosmos, signed in June 2022.
